Published in Paperback by Univ of North Carolina Pr (May, 1989)
Average review score:

Great Book for Garden TherapyGROWING WITH GARDENING is an excellent book to use when working with a group for garden/horticulture therapy. I am an Activity Director in a nursing home and have found this book full of ideas and guidance with what types of plants to plant, how to use them in programs including crafts, when to plant, how to prune and propagate, as well as other projects related to gardening. The book has step by step instructions to build a wheelchair accessible planter and to make a simple flower press. There are lists of supplies related to budget and ways to adapt the program to various ages and abilities. I have found this book has provided me with a wealth of new ideas to expand my residents gardening experiences.

A Guide to Southern Arizona Bird Nests & Eggs
Published in Paperback by Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum Press (April, 2001)
Average review score:

Praise for Merlin's GuideA must for everyone who enjoys bird watching and takes pleasure in studying and observing nature. Nicely organized and easy to use. The book teaches you how to look and catergorize bird nests, creating formulas which can then be applied anywhere you travel. The basic principles set a very good standard for all future guides. In addition, there are numerous and facinating entries about various species. For instance, the cow bird, never building his own nest and laying an egg a day in other species nests who then do all the work of incubating and feeding. While some birds make layered nests with a warbler observed being 6 layers deep. The comparative facts, for instance the Anna vs.Costa hummingbirds, were very interesting and helpful for field study. Excellent for both the novice and the more expert. The information, photographs and excellent drawings only make you want more.

A Gull's Story, A Tale of Learning about Life, the Shore, and the ABCs
Published in Hardcover by Jersey Shore Publications (31 January, 2002)
Average review score:

Caryn and daughters Matty & Julia Recommend "A Gull's Story"Being a lifelong resident of the Jersey Shore, I couldn't resist buying 'The Gull's Story' for my two daughters, ages 4 and 7. My little one spotted this book first because of the beautiful illustrations of the various birds and animals, but I have to admit, I was curious myself as to how this book would read and represent the shore area to others. We loved it so much, I was forced to buy another so each of my daughters could keep one for their own. For anyone who hasn't read this book with their children, its a beautifully written book about the life of a seagull and his creature friends who live on the Jersey Shore .. perfect book to read before bedtime. Another book we recommend (also illustrated by Margie Moore) is 'The Little Brown Bear ' Count the Ways,' a favorite especially for my 4 year old since she is still learning her numbers and letters. You will believe the animals in these stories are real by the way Ms. Moore brings out each of their little personalities. I believe this illustrator is a genius in her field of art and her talent of depicting the lives of the creatures in each story told. 'The Gull Story' is a 'must have' book for any child whether you live on the shore or not.

Gurdjieff and Mansfield
Published in Unknown Binding by Routledge & Kegan Paul ()
Average review score:

This well written book tells the real truth about them...Gurdjieff has been much slandered by people who claimed he somehow abetted Mansfield's death by tuberculosis or didn't help her sufficiently. In those days there was no cure for TB and she was already dying. He made her last days meaningful. The book will give some insight into his teaching and her interest in it. She had no complaints--was in fact grateful. She died as comfortably as she wouldhave anywhere. The book is out of print but can be found used.

Handbook of Standards and Resources for Spoken Language Systems
Published in Hardcover by Walter de Gruyter, Inc. (June, 1997)
Average review score:

a comprehensive information source for speech processingThis book gives a very comprehensive overview of all aspects of spoken language processing. It was written by leading members of the spoken language community (Expert Advisory Group on Language Engineering Standards). It is a very valuable reference source for designers of spoken language systems. Each chapter is concluded by a set of recommendations. For readers with a linguistics or CS background, it provides a comprehensive survey of all aspects of spoken language processing, and can be used as introduction to the field. Annoyingly, the book contains a number of typos, and could benefit from thorough proofreading. The book is also available as four reasonably priced paperbacks, some of which are not listed in the Amazon Catalog.

Handbook of Wildflowers, Weeds, Wildlife, and Weather of the South Bay and Palos Verdes Peninsula: Including Tidepool and Seashore Life

It has subjects not included in the titleThis paperback of 240 pages includes 122 pages of wildflowers/weeds, etc. of this Peninsula area, all carefully illustrated with black-and-white drawings for identification with comments. A detailed description of the Peninsula weather is included with statistics on temperatures and rainfall for over 20 observing stations and shows six distinct climate zones within this 5 x 10 mi. peninsula area in southwestern Los Angeles County. (The author is a meteorologist.) Other subjects included in the book are a bird list and other wildlife in the area, geology of the area, the history of the peninsula from Indian times to recent developments, origins of names in the South Bay, names and locations of the many canyons and trails on the peninsula, and an introduction to the identification of tidepool and seashore creatures. There is an index to the plants (color coded), a bibliography, and an addendum for recently discovered plants. The book has been praised as the local "bible" for nature lovers (and sometimes for researchers). Other short chapters tell of "Escapes and Fires," of edible plants, The book has photographs from the early days, some never before published. [Above description by the author]

Harm
Published in CD-ROM by Alternate Books (01 September, 2000)
Average review score:

Involved metafiction; a little loose but works. This is a complex novel whose story is really the text of the novel more than the story within that text. The plot is rather simple: a year leading up to a crisis of sorts in the life of a nihilistic sort of guy who finds his very existence -- which of course is something he can never get away from in this life -- harmful to himself. The story, though, is the text, how the plot is told. Employed here is a technique called decoupage: some prose here, then a poem, a newspaper article, a long story, and so forth. He does not employ the technique with the dexterity of, say, Julio Cortazar in "A Manual for Manuel", but this can be some complex stuff if done in a non-random fashion -- which is why you rarely have seen anything like it. It's not even the application of the technique that's the real trick here, though, it's the pattern that's reveal when you see the whole. The narrative parallels the action: just as Moore the character can't get away from his own existence, there's an actuated metaphor of Moore the novelist being unable to get away from his narrative voice, "try" as he might to get away from that by breaking the narrative into a small gallimaufry of voices (and doing it in a way that is anything but random in execution). In doing so, the writing style of course intentionally varies greatly, and so even if there's prose (or poetry) that you like (there was for me), there's going to be some that you don't (there was for me); and there's a little immaturity (in relation to doing something with this degree of difficulty, anyway), a little pretense (not as much as one might think, but . . .), a plot that isn't the most action-packed (though it isn't supposed to be), and a few details that don't seem all that realistic (though I think they're not supposed to be). But there really is something here, something both original and technically dextrous. To top it off, I read that this was this guy's first novel, and that it was written in his twenties.
